Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate women's golf signee Rachel Lewis dominated her final match, winning 5&4, to claim the 2010 Welsh Girls' Championship at Cardigan Golf Club in Cardigan, Wales.
Lewis, who will be a freshman for Upstate in the fall and who is from Llanishen, Wales, ended a successful summer of golf in the United Kingdom. She finished second in the stroke play portion of the Welsh Girls' Championship, turning in an 80 on Cardigan's par-74 course in the first round and a 77 on the par-73 course in the second round to shoot 157 and enter the match play portion of the tournament.
Lewis claimed a 7&5 victory in her opening round match against Megan Lockett to move into the quarterfinals. She battled her way through to take a 1-up victory over Sara Rees-Evans to move into the semifinals. She gutted out her second-straight 1-up win over Kelly Miller in the semifinals to setup a match with Katie Bradbury in the championship match. Despite two tough matches heading into the final, she eased her way to a 5&4 victory to take the Welsh Girls' Championship.
Earlier this summer, Lewis finished second at the South Wales Girls' Championship, shooting a 73 in the one-round event. She won the top putting award with 27 putts on the day. Earlier, she claimed 11th place out of 52 golfers in the Bridget Jackson Bowl in Handsworth, Wales, shooting rounds of 74 and 75 for a 149 total.
Lewis has a strong pedigree in junior golf in the UK. She serves as team captain of the South Wales Girls' Squad. She has been a member of the Welsh Girls' National Team and served as a first alternate in the 2010 Girls' European Championships. She qualified for the Scottish Team Championships, finished fourth in the 2009 Welsh Girls' Championship, won her club championship four times and has been a key player on the Llanishen High School team for five years.
