GREENVILLE, S.C. – Former USC Upstate cross country runner and current Broome High School athletic director Skip Frye was named to the South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association (SCTCCCA) Hall of Fame inductee as members joined at the Carolina First Center to discuss track and field at the high school level.
Frye started the cross country program at Broome in 1984 and has since coached boy's and girl's cross country for 26 seasons and boy's track and field for 22 seasons. Just recently Frye has also accepted the role as athletic director at the school, which he will fulfill in conjunction with his coaching career with the Centurions.
"Being selected to the hall of fame is humbling because of the caliber of coaches that have come before me" said Frye. "There are a lot of coaches still out there who are just as deserving as me but may not have had the 'breaks' that I have had in my career.
"Nonetheless, it is gratifying and it reaffirms that I have had some great assistant coaches as well as some hard working athletes at my side who have helped me through the years."
Frye joined the district in 1981 after teaching and serving as an assistant basketball coach for one year at Laurens Junior High School. During his tenure at Broome, Frye has led teams to 26 region championships and five state championships in boy's and girl's cross country and boy's track.
Steven "Skip" Frye came to Upstate in the fall of 1973 and competed in three sports over the next eight months. Frye was one of the best all-around athletes in the university's history, competing in cross country, basketball and baseball.
He was a teammate of Robert "Firechief" Smith's on the 1973-74 basketball team, and also played baseball that spring. As a runner, Frye was a NLCAA Cross Country All-American in 1973 and 1974. He was named to the NAIA Cross Country All-District Second team in 1977 and 1978, and the Third team in 1976. He led the 1977 squad to the NAIA District Championship, a first for the Spartan cross country team.
Frye, who is a member of the SCTCCCA, has twins, Cody and Meredith, who will be seniors this year at Broome High School.
