
Spartans Set to Open Fall Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's tennis team will kick-off the 2010 fall season by hosting the annual USC Upstate Fall Classic. The event will begin on Friday, Sept. 17, at 10:00 a.m. and will conclude on Sunday afternoon.
About the Week
At last year's Upstate Fall Classic, Cinthya Lazaro posted
two singles victories and added a win in doubles play on the first
day of the event and reached the 'A' Flight semifinals
before falling to eventual champion Marija Dzakovic of Charleston
Southern. Ana-Sofia Camberos teamed with Carolina Bello, who
is now in her first season as an assistant coach, fell in the
finals 'B' Flight doubles tournament.
Joining the Spartans at this weekend's tourament will be
Anderson College, Armstrong Atlantic State, Augusta State,
Campbell, Clemson, ETSU, Davidson, Furman, Kennesaw State,
Lenoir-Rhyne, Presbyterian College, South Carolina, USC Aiken and
Wofford.
This weekend's tournament will be the first of three
tournaments that the Spartans will compete in during the
fall. The Spartans will break from action until Oct. 15 when
they travel to Davidson, N.C., for the Davidson Tournament.
To conclude the fall season, Upstate will travel to Chapel Hill,
N.C., for the ITA Regional (10/21-24).
Spartan Volleys
• In their three years of Division I play, the Spartans have an all-time record of 42-12 (.778).
• Upstate has posted 10 wins for sixth consecutive seasons and
nine of the last 10 seasons.
• The Spartans have posted six straight winning conference
seasons, with three coming in thefinal three seasons at the
Division II level (Peach Belt Conference) and three in the first
three seasons of the Division I era (Atlantic Sun Conference).
• As a freshman, Francisca Valderrama became the 12th rookie
in school history to win 10 singles matches with her win against
FGCU (Apr. 3, 2010).
