
Kemboi, Tangwar Pace Spartans At Clemson Invite

Clemson, S.C. – The USC Upstate men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Clemson Invitational on Friday evening as the Spartan women finished third among nine teams and the men finished fourth of eight. The Spartans were paced by Joan Tangwar and Gilbert Kemboi who each recorded personal best times on the Musser Farms course.
The women were paced by Joan Tangwar who finished second individually and first for the Spartans with a personal best 17:38.14. Coming in second for the Spartans and 12th overall was Jemeli Sang in 18:25.68 while Caroline Chelulei finished third for the Spartans and 17th overall with a 18:43.72 showing.
Notably, a pair of ladies also recorded personal best times on the Musser Farms course. Nicole Yancey posted a 22:55.49 to finish eighth for the Spartans and 75th overall while Jillian Finney finished 10th for the Spartans and 81st overall with a new best 24:17.35.
As a whole, the women’s team placed third of nine teams with 93 points. First place went to host Clemson who posted 22 points and second went to Charlotte who registered 65 points.
On the men’s side of things, Kemboi won his second race in as many showings en route to breaking another school record in 23:58.79. Finishing second for the Spartans and 14th overall was Andrew Kipchumba who also was able to record a new personal best with a 26:05.23. Rounding out the top three for the Spartans was James Jackson who, also, ran a personal best time on the course, 26:41.12.
Impressively, out of the 13 male cross country runners that represented Upstate, seven of them recorded a personal best time in their second outing of the 2010 season. Dylan Taylor who finished 62nd overall ran a 30:08.89 *, Matt Johnson finished 64th with 30:24.20, Dustin Thomas finished 66th in 30:55.46 and Michael Johnson ran a 31:02.89 to place 67th.
As a whole, the men’s team placed fourth with 108 points. First place went to Davidson with 28 points.
The cross country teams will have another weekend off coming up before they head to Louisville, Ky. for the Greater Louisville Classic set to begin at 9 a.m., Saturday, October 2.
