
Cats In The Bag! Upstate Wins 3-0

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – USC Upstate volleyball picked up its sixth win on the season as the "U" routed the Catamounts of Western Carolina to the tune of 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-14).
Upstate (6-9) was led by Katie Downey who found the floor on a match-high 16 kills. Downey also recorded an ace and a trio of digs and blocks on the evening. Also assisting the Spartans was Mindy Quimby and Cori Harris with five kills apiece and Kelsie Queen who put away four. Emily Sanders put up 25 helpers and Morgan Page tallied seven digs.
WCU (4-10), who was playing in its 1,000 game in program history, was led by Amanda Chaparro who put away 10 kills, and Emily Franklin who put up 23 assists.
In the opening set, Sanders got the ball to Downey to trigger a 20-9 run for the "U". Upstate took the rest of the set in stride, finding an ace and a pair of kills from Harris while Quimby added the final tally to the scoreboard off a Sanders assist, 25-14.
The second set opened with WCU ahead, 3-0, following a pair of Catamounts kills and an Upstate error but the Spartans came back in line with WCU at 12 points apiece. The "U" found a comfortable lead following kills by Downey, Quimby and Queen, 17-13, and pushed the Spartans point cushion to nine off a Thomas kill to take the second, 25-16.
Upstate hit the court for the third set to find themselves matched with WCU through twelve points, 6-6. With the end close at hand, Upstate took advantage of Catamount errors and found the floor on kills from Harris, Thomas and Downey to come closer to the "W", 14-9. With the scoresheet for the Catamounts littered with errors, Upstate found its sixth victory on the season with a final set of 25-14.
Upstate will take a break from competition before competing again on Wednesday, September 29, in its second "home" match of the season and second conference contest against Campbell (4-11, 0-0). The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. on the campus of Converse College.
