
Campbell Downs Upstate In Four, 3-1

Spartanburg, S.C. – Allison Goldbach and Emily Werner each posted double-doubles for Campbell to offset the standout play of USC Upstate's Cori Harris to take a 3-1 victory in A-Sun volleyball action Wednesday night. The Camels won by scores of 25-21, 25-12, 18-25 and 25-15.
Campbell improved to 6-11 overall and 1-0 in the A-Sun in its conference opener. Upstate fell to 6-10 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Spartans will have a lengthy break before it hosts Belmont on Oct. 8.
Campbell and Upstate battled back and forth in set one before the Camels distanced themselves midway through the frame. Goldbach paced Campbell with six kills, while Annie Kobieski tallied a pair of aces.
Campbell was solid in the second set. With the set tied at 3-3, the Camels rattled off eight straight points to open an 11-3 lead. Upstate would only get as close as six points the rest of the frame as Campbell went on for the 25-12 win to open a 2-0 lead. Werner was strong, tallying seven kills on 14 attacks with no errors to lead the Camels.
Upstate fought back in the third set to take a 25-18 win. Harris tallied five kills in the frame, while Katie Downey and Morgan Thomas each totaled three. Upstate opened an 11-5 lead early in the set, but Campbell fought back with three straight points to cut the lead to three. However, Thomas posted back-to-back kills as Upstate took a 14-8 lead. The Spartans opened a 21-14 lead, but watched Campbell fight back to get within three, 21-18. Upstate, though, put four straight points on the board, the last on a service ace from Downey, to take the win.
With Upstate looking to stay in the match and force a decisive game five, Campbell hoped to end it in four. Again the teams battled back and forth and the set was tied at 9-9. A ball handling error gave Campbell a 10-9 lead and the Camels would not trail again. Campbell opened a 15-10 lead with two kills from Hope Leatigaga in the run. After Upstate cut the lead to 16-12, Campbell ran off four straight points to open a 20-12 lead and went on for the 25-15 win in the game and clinched the match. Kobieski and Werner each had five kills in the frame to lead the Camels.
Goldbach finished the game with 15 kills and 18 digs to lead the Campbell cause. She also had three assists. Werner tallied a match-high 17 kills to go along with 11 digs. Heather Wilson and Leatigaga each tallied 17 assists on the night, while Kelsey Campbell totaled 14 digs.
Harris was the only Upstate player to reach double figures in kill totals. She finished with 14 on the night to go along with nine digs. Downey and Thomas each had seven kills, while Megan Healey finished with 15 digs. Emily Sanders led the Spartans with 33 assists.
