Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team will join together with other Division I programs throughout the country in the American Cancer Society's Soccer Coaches vs. Cancer drive to raise funding and awareness in the battle against the cancer. Upstate's Coaches Versus Cancer events will take place this Friday night when the Spartans play host to A-Sun foe Florida Gulf Coast at 7:00 p.m. at Country University Soccer Stadium.
October is cancer awareness month and soccer coaches from across the country have joined together in the battle against the deadly disease. The A-Sun has stressed the importance of participating in helping the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer.
"Cancer is such a horrible disease that has affected millions of families around the world," said Upstate head coach Greg Hooks. "Everyone knows someone or is related to someone who has had the disease. The coaching community has the ability to galvanize support and draw attention to the battle against cancer, and we are proud to be a part of helping in that fight."
This year's Soccer Coaches vs. Cancer drive raises money through a raffle at each participating institution. Soccer players are asked to sell raffle tickets for $5 each. A raffle ticket will be selected at the game and the winner will receive an autographed jersey from the home institution complete with the Coaches vs. Cancer logo. All proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the American Cancer Society. In addition to the jersey raffle, a representative from the American Cancer Society will be on hand to distribute information in the organization's fight against cancer.
Raffle tickets are available through the men's soccer program. For more information or to purchase a raffle ticket in advance of Friday's game, please contact assistant coach Geoff de Forn at (864) 503-5041. Raffle tickets will also be available at the gate at the men's soccer game Friday night.
