Rock Hill, S.C. – USC Upstate sophomore Rachel Lewis (Llanishen, Wales) led the Spartans on the course at the Winthrop Invitational, carding an 81 in the opening round as Upstate fired a 337 to open the tournament.
Upstate is in seventh place in the tournament after opening with a 337. Lewis' 81 was the low score on the day as all of the players ran into trouble at varying points on the course. She stands tied for 16th on the individual leaderboard.
Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.), playing in what amounts to be a homecoming, carded an 84 as the second-lowest Spartan. Brittany Lowe (Spartanburg) finished with an 85, while Taylor Pleier (Spartanburg) finished with an 87. Madison Bryant (Chapin, S.C.) turned in an 89.
The teams will complete the 36-hole tournament with the final round Sunday. The tournament is being played at the Rock Hill Country Club, a 6,007-yard, par-72 layout.
Gardner-Webb opened the tournament with a 307 and owns a one-stroke lead heading into the final round on Sunday. Winthrop is second at 308 and is followed by Presbyterian College (311), Appalachian State (313), Bethune-Cookman (330), The Citadel (332), Upstate (337) and St. Francis (Pa.) (345).
Appalachian State's Lauren Smith shot a 1-under-par 71 and owns the individual lead by a stroke over Gardner-Webb's Sammy Vass.
