Spartanburg, S.C. – Around the beginning of the last decade, members of the USC Upstate men's soccer program, the athletic department and the University knew that Rory Scovel was certainly a character. He possessed the ability to make a joke out of any situation and keep things interesting. Members of the Spartanburg community will be able to see it for themselves when Scovel plays at the Showroom at Hub-Bub tonight at 8:00 p.m. as part of his national tour to support the release of his debut album, "Dilation."
Scovel, a native of Greenville, S.C., was a member of the Upstate men's soccer program from 2000-02. Despite his comic talents, he was a more than dedicated student-athlete and was a starter at right back for the Spartans. He helped lead the Spartans to a pair of Peach Belt Conference Tournament championships and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament. He graduated in 2003 with a degree in communications.
Since leaving Upstate, Scovel pursued his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian and entertainer. After years spent working on his craft in Washington D.C. and New York City, Scovel's career has blossomed. He has made several national television appearances, including NBC's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" and Conan O'Brien's late-night show on TBS, as well as appearing numerous times on Comedy Central. He has also opened shows for nationally-known comics Louis C.K., Daniel Tosh and Nick Swardson.
In addition to his work as a comedian, Scovel has appeared in national television commercials for Circuit City and Land Rover, and was the star of Sprint's NASCAR commercial campaign that kicked off the 2011 NASCAR season. He has moved to Los Angeles to work on transitioning himself into the entertainment mainstream with the goal of landing a job in television and, possibly, his own show.
Scovel's work as a stand-up comedian has progressed to the point where he has released his debut comic album, "Dilation," which embodies his comic genius. He kicked off a national tour in Greenville Tuesday night and is playing at the Showroom tonight in Spartanburg. He is making 18 show appearances in November alone, beginning his tour in the Southeast.
