CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District Release
Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate midfielder Timo Foerster not only has excelled on the playing field, but is an exceptional student in the classroom. On Friday, he earned first team Capital One Academic All-District honors and will now be considered for Academic All-America selection.
"I am very happy for Timo," said Upstate head coach Dr. Greg Hooks. "This is a great honor for both the University and him. Timo represented USC Upstate well both in the classroom and on the soccer field."
The Capital One Academic All-America program is administered by CoSIDA, the College Sports information Directors of America. It is the premiere Academic All-America program in the nation. Foerster was a first team all-district selection in District IV which includes schools in the states of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and the nation of Puerto Rico.
Foerster a senior from Oberkirk, Germany, has been the epitome of the student-athlete during his time at Upstate. In the classroom, he owns a 3.96 GPA as an accounting major. He is a three-time selection to the A-Sun All-Academic team and is an A-Sun Conference Scholar. He has earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in four of the six semesters he has completed at the University, earning a B+ in one class in two different semesters. He is also a three-time member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Upstate.
On the field, Foerster has been a building block in the foundation of the program on the Division I level. He came to Upstate as a freshman in 2008, the Spartans' second season playing on the DI level. He was a starter from the beginning of his collegiate career. He finished his career with 26 points on five goals and 16 assists. He collected three game-winning goals in his four years.
An unselfish player, Foerster played as a central attacking midfielder. Although he scored five goals in his career, he was used mainly as the catalyst to start the offensive attack for the Spartans. A skilled player who could distribute the ball, he led the team in assists each year since his sophomore season. He totaled all 16 career assists in the last three years alone.
Foerster is Upstate's top offensive player during the Division I era at Upstate. He ranks first in seven categories during the era, including points (26), assists (16), shots on goal (40) and game-winning goals (3). He currently ranks third in the A-Sun and 48th in the nation with five total assists and a 0.4 assists per game average in 2011.
Foerster is one of four players from the A-Sun to earn first team Capital One Academic All-District honors. He is joined on the first team by Mercer's Will Betts and Stetson's Luis Ocejo and Joakim Helland. Last year, Upstate's Chris McCoy (Houston, Texas) was a first team Academic All-District selection as well, giving the Spartans two first team picks in the last two years.
