Sedona, Ariz. – The USC Upstate women's golf team opened play at the Red Rocks Invitational, posting a 335 on Friday and stands tied for 13th heading into the final round on Saturday.
Rachel Lewis (Llanishen, Wales) is in position for her fifth top-20 finish of the season after firing an opening round 80. She is tied for 19th heading into Saturday's final round. She is one of eight players who carded an 80 on Friday. She is seven shots back of the lead and just four strokes out of the top five.
Northern Arizona, the host of the tournament, opened with a 304 to take the lead by nine strokes over Western Michigan (313). Montana is third at 315 and is followed by Nevada (319), Grand Canyon (321), Eastern Michigan (322), Toledo (325), Montana State (327), North Dakota State (329), Southern Utah (331), Eastern Washington (331), Weber State (333), Upstate (335), Northern Colorado (335), Utah Valley (336), Portland (338), Idaho State (352) and South Dakota (365).
In addition to the play of Lewis, Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) opened the tournament with an 83 and is tied for 42nd in a tight field. Taylor Pleier (Spartanburg, S.C.) shot an 85. The three freshmen – Lewis, Hall and Pleier – have led the Spartans throughout the season and continued to do so on Friday.
Johanna Ebenhag (Gothenberg, Sweden) opened with an 87, while Summer Wall (Chesnee, S.C.) came in with a 97.
Northern Arizona's Dakin Whitmer shot a 1-over-par 73 to take the individual lead by two strokes over Leah Grawberg (Western Michigan) and teammate Alexa Kim.
