Howie-In-The-Hills, Fla. – Spartanburg native Taylor Pleier opened the Spring Fling Invitational with a 76 to take the individual lead after the first round and helped push USC Upstate into the lead Friday afternoon with a team score of 326.
Upstate stands seven strokes ahead of Boston College, which turned in a 333, and 19 shots in front of Bethune-Cookman, which shot a 345.
Pleier was solid throughout the day and came home with a 76 to open a two-shot lead over Bethune-Cookman's Kimberly Wong.
"Taylor's putting was on," said Upstate assistant coach Sandy Halkett. "Amanda (Hall) made some great up and downs. The mood of the team is good. I think we are excited that we have done well against two teams who have already beaten us this year. We just need to stay focused Saturday and hope to get similar results."
Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) was solid on the day as well and used her ability to get up and down to save strokes to post a 79. Rachel Lewis (Llanishen, Wales) turned in an 83. Johanna Ebenhag (Gothenberg, Sweden) shot an 88, while Marissa Clontz (Greenville, S.C.) opened with a 95.
