West Virginia Downs Upstate in Non-Conference Action

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – West Virginia defeated USC Upstate, 6-1, non-conference women's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon at USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Despite pushing the Mountaineers to the limit at the No. 2 doubles position, the Spartans surrendered the doubles point after dropping all three doubles matches. At the No. 2 doubles position for the Spartans, it was Maria Tonani and Ana-Sofia Camberos that gave the Mountaineers a run for their money, as the tandem would drop a heartbreaking, 9-7, decision to West Virginia's Veronica Cardenas and Liv Pettersson.
The Mountaineers' Emily Mathis and Mary Chupa claimed an 8-2 win over Upstate's Talia Rojas and Karen Martinez at the No.1 doubles flight, while Catie Wickline and Anna Rodionova picked up an 8-3 win over Samantha Knopsnyder and Catherine Estupinan at the No.3 position.
Upstate put forth strong battles in each of its six singles matches against its Big East foe. The Spartans claimed their only point of the afternoon as a result of Martinez's 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win against Cardenas at the No. 3 position.
Knopsnyder put in another solid effort for Upstate at the No.6 singles position, as she was able to push the Mountaineers' Wickline to the limit, only to drop the match in heartbreaking fashion, 7-5, 7-5.
Tonani put the Mountaineers' Mathis to the test at the No. 1 singles post, before eventually falling, 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, it was Rojas testing West Virginia's Rodionova at the No. 4 spot, forcing a third set tiebreaker, before dropping the match, 6-3, 2-6, 2-6.
Upstate will return to Atlantic Sun action this weekend, as it will travel to the Peach State for a pair of league clashes with Mercer and Kennesaw State. The Spartans will face Mercer on Friday in a match slated for 10 a.m.
