Spartanburg, S.C. – On Monday, Sept. 12, the USC Upstate softball team assisted with the Carolina Miracle League, serving as buddies for the participants as part of the Athletic Department's community outreach initiatives.
The Carolina Miracle League is a charitable organization that provides children with mental and/or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league. The organization has as its motto, "Every child deserves a chance to play baseball," and the Upstate softball team joined in the cause to assist the participants in achieving that goal.
The North Spartanburg Sports Complex in Boiling Springs, S.C., serves as the host site for the Carolina Miracle League. The organization runs leagues in the Fall and Spring and offers two participant groups, the Majors and Minors. The Upstate softball team served as buddies for the Majors' division game on Sept. 12. It was the season-opening game for the Fall season.
Each Upstate softball player served as a buddy for one of the players in the league. The softball players were asked to make sure that their buddy player was safe at all times and assisted them with the basic fundamentals of playing the game of baseball. They also assisted, when needed, each player in hitting, running and throwing, always staying positive and energetic in supporting each player's ability to play and participate.
