
Spartans Dominate Doubles at Duckworth Fall Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team dominated the opening day of the Clemson University Duckworth Fall Classic Friday, winning 10 matches and advancing to three doubles finals at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
The three-day event kicked off in style for the Spartans who posted a 10-2 record on the opening day, including a perfect 6-0 mark in doubles action.
Julie Bell and Taylor Cohen opened the weekend with an 8-2 victory over Clayton State's Koeling/Leanana and cruised into the semifinal round of the Flight 3 "White" draw where they battled past Furman's Murray/Sullivan to secure a spot in the championship match.
Talia Rojas and Constanze Kuerten were equally impressive in the Flight 5 "Silver" draw, taking down Charleston Southern's Wilkins/Holbrooks 8-1, before advancing to the semifinals and knocking off a Lipscomb duo 8-6 to advance to the championship round. Rojas/Kuerten will take on Tennessee Chattanooga's Jones/Polk for the title.
Isabel von Stryk and Allison Beeler teamed up in the Flight 6 "Bronze" draw and posted back-to-back wins of their own to advance to the championship match. The combo took down Wofford's Coventry/Johnson 8-4 in the opening round, before and 8-3 victory in the second round has matched von Stryke/Beeler with Tennessee Chattanooga's Flynn/Storie in the championship round.
The Spartans recorded four more wins in singles action, as Kuerten led the way and won a marathon three-set affair over USA's Mary-Angela Martin 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Bell, Rojas and Beeler all cruised to straight set victories and will continue in their respective winner's brackets Saturday morning.
The Duckworth Fall Classic hosted by Clemson University features 19 teams from around the southeast representing NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NAIA.
