Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate standout goalkeeper Dani Alvarado was named the A-Sun co-Defensive Player of the Week after helping lead Upstate to its third conference victory of the season last week.
Alvarado, a sophomore from Leander, Texas, led Upstate to a key 1-0 overtime victory at Lipscomb last Sunday to earn his second defensive player of the week honor from the A-Sun. He also earned weekly honors after recording 12 saves at Clemson in August. The win against Lipscomb gave the Spartans nine points in the league standings with three league victories, keeping the squad in the No. 4 position for the upcoming six-team A-Sun Tournament.
Alvarado came up with three saves in the game at Lipscomb, two in the second half, to keep the Bisons off the scoreboard. The shutout was his fifth of the season for the first-year starter, one shy of the Division I era single season school record. It also gave Upstate three league wins, which stands as the most conference wins since moving to Division I in 2008. The win was also the fifth overall this season, tying the 2009 and 2011 teams for the most wins in the Division I era.
Alvarado currently ranks second in the A-Sun with a 0.96 goals against average, five shutouts and an .822 save percentage. He ranks fourth with 60 saves.
