Spartanburg, S.C. – Not only will Sunday's men's soccer match between USC Upstate and Mercer be crucial in seeding for the upcoming A-Sun Tournament, it will also be crucial in the education and fundraising efforts in the battle against cancer as the Spartans will take part in the Coaches vs. Cancer campaign sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
Upstate is participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer event as part of the Athletic Department's cancer initiatives in its community outreach program. The A-Sun men's soccer coaches banded together with each institution hosting a Coaches vs. Cancer game during conference play this season. Proceeds are given to the American Cancer Society in an effort to assist the organization in its outreach and fundraising efforts. Together, the A-Sun coaches and the ACS hope to increase the education about the different forms of cancer, as well as raise necessary funding in the battle against the disease.
"We at Upstate are proud to join with the coaches throughout the A-Sun in hosting the Coaches vs. Cancer game," said Upstate head coach Greg Hooks. "Cancer is such a debilitating and deadly disease. We are honored to assist in the efforts to battle the disease. Cancer has touched everyone one way or another, and we want to do our part to lessen the number of people affected by the disease."
A variety of activities will be scheduled for the game. All gate proceeds will be donated to Upstate's cancer initiative events, while an autographed jersey will be awarded to a lucky winner who attends the game. In addition, the Upstate Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will offer a bake sale and run promotions in an effort to raise funding for the cause.
Upstate will take on Mercer in a crucial A-Sun game starting at 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at County University Soccer Stadium. Admission to the game is $5 for adults and $3 for children high school age and under.
