DAVIDSON, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team opened play at the Davidson Fall Invitational on Friday and served up seven wins on day one of the two-day event at the Covington Tennis Courts.
The Spartans continued their strong play in doubles action, winning four of six matches and including a clean sweep over UNC Asheville.
Julie Bell and Taylor Cohen battled past the Asheville duo of Zoe Hamel and Amryn Solder by an 8-3 score, but later fell in a marathon match to Viviana Stavreva and Mara Camara of Elon. The two hour affair saw the Spartan pair come out on the short end of a 9-8 decision.
Constanze Kuerten and Talia Rojas were also on point in the early session, knocking off Asheville's Christine Boissevain and Emily McNall 8-6, but fell later in the day by the same score to Elon's Briana Berne and Taylor Casey.
Isabel von Stryke and Allison Beeler were perfect in two chances, taking down Asheville's Jessica Dodge and Gillian Lewis by an 8-4 score, before blanking the duo of Elon's Caroline Baker and Asheville's Amy Cloer.
The Spartans earned a trio of wins in singles play, as Beeler kept her perfect day going with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Davidson's Elise Held, while Rojas cruised by Davidson's Blake Nickles in straight sets.
Kuerten had to battle her way to a 7-5 opening set victory over Davidson's Elaina Cummer, but the freshman took the match in straight sets with a 6-0 win in the second set.
Bell was locked in a three-set duel with Davidson's Catherine Wood, taking the opening set 6-3, before dropping the second 6-4 and falling in the tiebreaker 10-7.
The Spartans return to action Saturday at 9 a.m. as they take part in the second and final day of the Davidson Fall Invitational at the Covington Tennis Courts.
