BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team capped its fall season over the weekend, playing at the Gardner-Webb Fall Classic and picking up 14 singles victories and six doubles wins.
With high hopes for the spring season, the Spartans ended their fall campaign in style, using victories in 14 of 17 singles matches and six of seven doubles matches to dominate the field.
Taylor Cohen and Julie Bell continued their success in doubles, pairing up to go a perfect 2-0 with victories over UNC Asheville and Western Carolina University. The duo knocked off UNCA's Hamel/Solder, 8-5, while cruising past WCU's Kissel/Ruiz, 8-2.
Constanze Kuerten and Talia Rojas were also unbeaten in two doubles matches, taking down Bettiol/Nielly of Western Carolina, 8-6, and knocking off UNC Asheville's Boissevain/McNall, 8-3.
Isabel von Stryk and Sarah Vande Berg picked up an 8-4 victory over UNCA's Lewis/Cloer, and Kuerten/Cohen gave Upstate its sixth and final doubles win with an 8-5 knockout of Gardner-Webb's White/Hutterli.
Von Stryk was equally impressive in singles play, picking up wins in all three of her matches and doing so in straight set fashion. The sophomore surrendered just seven games in six sets.
Cohen was also perfect with three wins in singles action. The junior dropped an opening set 7-6 to Western Carolina's Nielly, but rallied with a 6-0 victory in the second set and captured the match with a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker.
Kuerten tallied a pair of singles wins, including a three-set thriller over Gardner-Webb's Erica White 7-6 (11), 2-6, 10-2.
The Spartans continued to roll as Bell, Rojas and Vande Berg combined to win six of eight matches and give Upstate a 14-3 record in singles play at the two-day event.
With five fall tournaments in the books, the Spartans will now turn their attention to the 2013 spring season. The 2013 spring will be released in the coming weeks that will feature a full Atlantic Sun Conference slate.
