2012 A-Sun All-Conference Selections
Spartanburg, S.C. – Senior defender John Kadane and sophomore forward Dave Musambi have been key players throughout the season and helped lead the USC Upstate men's soccer team to its best season since moving to Division I and the A-Sun in 2007. Their efforts did not go unnoticed as both were selected to the A-Sun All-Conference team Tuesday afternoon.
Kadane and Musambi were second team all-conference selections. Kadane (Garland, Texas) earned his second all-conference honor after receiving second team all-conference honors last season. Musambi (Ottawa, Ontario) earned his first all-conference nod after taking home all-freshman honors last year from the league. In addition, Musambi, who carries a 3.571 GPA as a Business Economics and Finance major, was named to the A-Sun Academic All-Conference team.
"Both John and Dave are very deserving of this honor," said Upstate head coach Greg Hooks. "Their play throughout the season not only helped us win some games, but also enabled us to achieve a goal of qualifying for the A-Sun Tournament. I am proud of the work they have put into the program and their leadership in the success of the team this season. They truly deserve every honor they receive."
Kadane has simply been a standout player and leader since coming to Upstate as a freshman in 2009. He has been a team captain and a stalwart in the defensive unit. He has helped the Spartans record 14 shutouts in the last four seasons, including a single season Division I era school record six last year. Despite playing a defensive position, he has produced offensively as well. He ranks fifth during Upstate's Division I era with 15 career points and fourth with six goals. His three game-winning goals stand as the most during the Division I era.
Kadane owns the school's Division I era record with 61 starts and has started every game he has played in his career. In addition to his stellar play on the field, he is also a tremendous student-athlete and is a multiple selection to the A-Sun All-Academic team as a Business Management major.
After a standout freshman season in 2001, Musambi turned out to be even better this season for Upstate. He leads Upstate and ranks sixth in the A-Sun with 12 points as the Spartans' top scoring threat at forward. He ranks fifth with five goals, two of which were game winners against UNC Asheville and Lipscomb. He has posted five goals and two assists on the year.
Musambi's scoring ability helped Upstate improve its offensive numbers from a year ago. This season, the Spartans scored 54 points on 18 goals and 18 assists. Last season, Upstate scored 41 points on 14 goals and 13 assists.
Kadane and Musambi helped lead Upstate to three A-Sun wins and 10 points in the league standings. Both figures are program highs since joining the A-Sun. The Spartans will continue their season Wednesday night at 7:00 in the first round of the A-Sun Tournament being hosted by Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla. Upstate is the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 Lipscomb.
