Jacksonville, Fla. – Sophomore and Tega Cay, S.C., native Amanda Hall led the USC Upstate women's golf team Monday, finishing with a 78 to lead the Spartans to a team 323 score in the second round of the Courtyard Classic.
The Courtyard Classic is being played at Hidden Hills Country Club and is a 54-hole event hosted by Jacksonville University. The tournament will conclude with the final round on Tuesday.
Hall was solid on the day with her team-best 78. It marked a five-stroke improvement over her first round score of 83 on Sunday. It allowed her to move into a tie for 19th with a 36-hole total of 161.
Upstate shot a 323 on the day, one stroke back of its first round score of 322. With a 645 total, the Spartans stand sixth in the tournament. A-Sun foe Mercer shot 311 on Monday and owns a 607 tournament total. The Bears will enter the final round in the lead by 10 strokes.
A-Sun rival Jacksonville is second with a 617 total and is followed by Daytona State (625), A-Sun foe Florida Gulf Coast (634), Florida Atlantic (636) and Upstate (645). The Spartans are nine strokes out of fifth place.
"I think the course played a little more difficult today," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "Our team score didn't improve and that is unfortunate. Amanda and Taylor (Pleier) played better and both putted well. Brittany (Lowe) again showed consistency."Each day is a new day and tomorrow gives us another opportunity. Making up ground is possible, but will take a contribution from everyone."
Spartanburg natives and Dorman High School graduates Brittany Lowe and Taylor Pleier lead Upstate overall in the tournament. The two are tied for 16th individually with 160 tournament totals. Lowe matched her first round score with an 80 Monday. Pleier improved her score by two strokes, finishing Monday with a 79.
Rachel Lewis (Llanishen, Wales) is tied for 26th after shooting 86 on Monday. She owns a 164 total after shooting 78 in the first round. Kristi Goodman (Easley, S.C.) is 33rd with a 186 total.
With a 73 on Monday, Mercer's Lacey Fears maintained the lead individual lead. She sits atop the leaderboard with an even-par 144 total and will enter the final round with a three stroke lead.
