Southport, N.C. – Brittany Lowe led the USC Upstate women's golf team on the first day of the Spider Invitational at St. James Plantation Saturday afternoon. Lowe stands tied for 37th heading into the final round.
Upstate recorded rounds of 351 and 358 on a difficult day in difficult conditions. The Spartans are 11th in the tournament field, 11 strokes ahead of 12th-place The Citadel and 35 out of 10th place owned by Presbyterian College.
"This is one of the most difficult courses I have seen in women's college golf," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "It is demanding everywhere, but it is fair. Getting a little beat up here helps us see how much work must be put in over the next month before we get to our conference championship."
Boston College opened the tournament with rounds of 312 and 318 to take the 36-hole lead with a 640 total. Charleston Southern is second with a 646 total and is followed by UNC Pembroke (658), Delaware (659), Winthrop (661), Richmond (665), Wofford (665), Appalachian State (668), Gardner-Webb (669), Presbyterian College (674), Upstate (709) and The Citadel (720).
Lowe (Spartanburg, S.C.) led Upstate on the day. She turned in rounds of 83 and 87 and is tied for 37th with a 170 total heading into the final round on Sunday.
"Brittany was steady in the difficult conditions today," said Lawton. "She did have some bad holes, but she was able to put them in perspective and continued to grind for us."
Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) shot rounds of 88 and 91 and is tied for 52nd with a 179 total. Madison Bryant (Chapin, S.C.) carded rounds of 89 and 90 and is tied with Hall with a 179 total.
