Spartanburg, S.C. – For the third time this year, USC Upstate freshman standout Shellie Robinson has been named the A-Sun Player of the Week after leading the Spartans to three wins on the road in Nashville to close out the regular season last weekend.
Robinson, from DeLand, Fla., was named the player of the week after hitting .571 and leading Upstate to a split at Lipscomb and a sweep at Belmont. The wins secured third place for the Spartans in the conference standings and the No. 3 seed in the upcoming A-Sun Tournament being hosted by Upstate at Cyrill Stadium Wednesday-Saturday. Upstate opens the A-Sun Tournament against Stetson Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. Upstate is 39-11 overall and 12-6 in the A-Sun.
Robinson finished the week with eight hits, including two home runs and two doubles. She finished with four RBIs, three runs and a 1.143 slugging percentage. She was also flawless in the field in five chances.
Robinson began the week by going 3-for-4 with a home run, double and single in the 9-1 win at Lipscomb in the opening game of the doubleheader. She missed the cycle by a triple. She was 1-for-3 with an intentional walk in the second game. She got Upstate off with a bang in the doubleheader at Belmont the next day, belting a leadoff home run in the first inning of the first game. She finished the game 3-for-5 with a home run, double and single, missing hitting for the cycle again by a triple in leading Upstate to the 8-1 win. She also had a hit in the second game, an 8-0 victory in five innings.
Robinson has earned more player of the week selections from the A-Sun than any other Upstate position player since moving to the A-Sun in 2008. She surpassed Kim Brasil and Lauren Quevedo, who each had two in their careers. All-time great pitcher Morgan Childers was named the pitcher of the week nine times.
