Spartanburg, S.C. – Spartanburg native Brittany Lowe shot a final round 73 to lead the USC Upstate cause at the Terrier Intercollegiate played at Country Club of Spartanburg Tuesday afternoon. Lowe finished tied for a career-best eighth individually, while the Spartans finished 10th on the team leaderboard.
Lowe was simply solid throughout the day and finished the round at 1-over-par. The tie for eighth is her best career finish, topping a tie for 20th at the 2011 Holiday Inn Express Hatter Classic last November. She finished the tournament with a 148 total after opening with a 75 on Monday.
"I am extremely, extremely proud of Brittany, not just for her round today, but for the entire tournament," said Upstate assistant coach Audrey Church. "She is a determined player. She will not get negative no matter what happens during a round. She works so hard. She just won't let things get her down. She stays focused and patient."
Upstate shot another solid round, finishing with a 317 Tuesday to claim 10th with a 630 total. The two rounds under 320 mark the best 36-hole tournament outing since the squad fired rounds of 297 and 307 in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate last September.
"We got off to a rough start today," said Church. "We had quite a few big numbers right off the bat. I was impressed with their intensity. They were not going to let the slow start determine the round. They all turned it around and played through it. The fact we had one Top 10 and one Top 20 in our first tournament, it just shows that we are going in the right direction."
UNC Pembroke started the day seven shots out of first place, but stormed back to win the championship by shooting a 294 Tuesday for a 595 total. Gardner-Webb was second with a 597 total and was followed by UNC Wilmington (602), Wofford (604), Mercer (605), Elon (614), Samford (616), High Point (618), Appalachian State (619), Upstate (630), Presbyterian (639), The Citadel (651) and S.C. State (657).
Taylor Barnes (Spartanburg, S.C.) claimed a Top 20 finish in the tournament as the second-lowest Spartan. She shot an 81 Tuesday for a 153 total. Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) lowered her score by three strokes over Monday's effort and turned in an 81 on Tuesday.
Madison Bryant (Chapin, S.C.) turned in the best tournament of her career, finishing with rounds of 82 and 83 for a 165 total. Rachel Reiling (Littleton, Colo.) wrapped up her first tournament at Upstate by lowering her second round score by two strokes over Monday's opening round to shoot 82. Malika Allie (Cape Town, South Africa) played as an individual in the tournament. She had a tremendous turnaround on Tuesday, shooting a 76 to shave eight strokes off of her score from Monday.
"Madison has been working very hard for these type of results, for our sake as well as her own," said Church. "Coming in as a freshman and with all of the adjustments Malika has had to make as far as the time changes and different course conditions, her effort was impressive. You just can't shake her on the course. She felt much more comfortable on the course today."
Gardner-Webb's Mary K Donovan won the individual championship after shooting a 75 on Tuesday and finishing with a 143 total. She won the tournament by one stroke.
Upstate will hit the links again next Monday for the two-day Great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville, N.C.
