Spartanburg, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's golf team is gearing up for its second tournament of the season, the Great Smokies Intercollegiate, and will tee off Monday morning.
The Great Smokies Intercollegiate is a 36-hole, two-day tournament which will wrap-up on Tuesday. It is being played at the Waynesville Inn Golf Resort and Spa. The course plays at 5,932 yards and is a par-72 layout. Upstate will be joined in the 16-team tournament by UAB, Appalachian State, The Citadel, Eastern Kentucky, Elon, Morehead State, Presbyterian, Samford, Sandhills Community College, Savannah College of Art & Design, S.C. State, Tennessee Tech, USC Beaufort, Western Carolina and Western Kentucky. The Spartans will play Monday's round with Western Kentucky and USC Beaufort. Eastern Kentucky returns as the defending champion of the event.
Upstate will make its fifth appearance in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate. The Spartans return to a course where they made program history just one year ago when the team shot a single-round school record 297 in the first round of the tournament with countable rounds of three 74s and a 75. The Spartans finished 14th last season and have a best finish of ninth in 2008.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the lineup of Brittany Lowe, Taylor Barnes, Malika Allie, Rachel Reiling and Madison Bryant into action this week. Lowe led the Spartans with her first career Top 10 finish earlier this week at the Terrier Intercollegiate. Barnes claimed a Top 20 finish and the Spartans shot rounds of 313 and 317 to open the season. Lowe and Barnes are the only players in the lineup this season who have played in the Great Smokies. Barnes shot 74 and 77 in last year's tournament, while Lowe posted scores of 74 and 80 to help the Spartan cause.
