
Spartans Debut in Style at Elon Fall Invitational

ELON, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team opened the fall campaign in midseason form on Friday, going 8-2 on day one of the Elon Fall Invitational at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Spartans posted a 6-1 mark in singles action, led by a dominating performance from Talia Rojas who blanked Virginia Tech's Marshal Temory 6-0, 6-0. Constanze Kuerten and Isabel Von Stryk followed and posted 6-1, 6-1 victories over Virginia Tech's Emily Lauten and North Carolina A&T's Cayla Cross respectively.
Taylor Cohen was equally impressive in her Upstate debut, shutting down North Carolina A&T's Jayla Scott 6-0, 6-1. Julie Bell notched a 6-0, 6-2 win over Meredith's Mary Lawrence Newton, and Sarah Vande berg knocked off Meredith's Betty Edwards 6-2, 6-4 to open the fall season. Senior transfer Allison Beeler was locked in a battle with Western's Karen Jimenez, but fell 7-6 (7), 6-4 after a marathon first set.
USC Upstate dominated two of three doubles matches, as Beeler and Kuerten ran over NC Central's Palko and Ramic 8-3, while Cohen and Bell upended Elon's Lazarova and Stavreva by the same score. Von Stryk and Rojas dropped an 8-1 decision to Campbell's Chemaya and Ortiz, one two losses for Upstate on the day.
The Elon Fall Invitational continues on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
