MACON, Ga. – Senior Gilbert Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya) of the USC Upstate men's cross country team earned his ninth-career Atlantic Sun Conference Runner of the Week honor, the most in A-Sun cross country history, as announced by the league Wednesday.
Kemboi was named the A-Sun Runner of the Week after posting a second-place finish Sept. 15 at the 26th annual Winthrop Invitational, which also served as the South Carolina Intercollegiate Championship. He crossed the line in 24:14.75, recording the fastest 8K time in the conference this season. Kemboi was named the South Carolina Intercollegiate Individual Champion.
"Setting the A-Sun weekly awards record just shows that Gilbert is consistent week-in and week-out," said Upstate associate head coach Carson Blackwelder. "He had a good race on Saturday and put up a solid time against some strong competition."
The senior helped the Spartans to a sixth-place overall finish in the team standings, coming in first among the South Carolina schools to claim the 2012 state championship team title. In the overall race standings, Kemboi was edged by Louisville's Ernest Kibet with a time of 24:13.17. The Cardinals are ranked No. 7 in the Southeast Region and topped the team standings Saturday with three finishers in the top eight. High Point, who is ranked No. 12 in the Southeast Region, came in fifth in the men's 8K with160 points.
Kemboi and the rest of the Spartans return to action Sept. 28, traveling to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Paul Short Invitational. Follow Upstate cross country this season on your mobile device, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
