SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team opened the USC Upstate Fall Classic with plenty of success Friday afternoon, picking nine total victories on the day and setting themselves up to make a run throughout the weekend.
Following her perfect performance last weekend at the Elon Invitational, Taylor Cohen remained unbeaten during the fall campaign as she posted a win in singles play and two more victories in doubles action.
She opened the day with Julie Bell in the doubles draw and the pair cruised by Presbyterian's Kayla Stanford and Haley Elliot 8-0, before knocking off the Wofford duo of Mareli Stanford and Lucey Schmerhorn 9-7 in dramatic fashion.
Cohen then continued her success in singles play, taking down Presbyterian's Patricia Alves 6-0, 6-4 to set up a showdown with top-seeded Sarah Evans of Wofford Saturday morning.
Allison Beeler and Constanze Kuerten picked up an 8-0 victory in doubles action over Wofford's Tessa Johnson and Audrey Coventry, but the Spartan duo dropped a second round matchup with Presbyterian's Greer Ransom and Danielle Jones.
Isabel von Stryk picked up a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Wofford's Sanchez and Kuerten toppled Presbyterian's Stanford in straight sets, dropping just four combined games.
Beeler and Talia Rojas both cruised to straight set victories with Rojas advancing to take on second-seeded Lyn Yee Choo of ETSU.
The Spartans have five singles players alive in the winner's bracket of the draw, while the unstoppable combo of Cohen and Bell are the only doubles pair in the winner's bracket for Upstate.
Play resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with singles action, followed by the third round of the doubles draw at 1 p.m. Every match of the USC Upstate Fall Classic is played at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
