SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team produced mixed results Saturday on day two of the USC Upstate Fall Classic, but have three singles players and two doubles teams advancing to Sunday's finale.
Constanze Kuerten made her way through the main draw on Saturday with a pair of victories to move the freshman into a Sunday showdown with ETSU's lyn Yee Choo for the right to play in the singles championship. Kuerten toppled ETSU's Kelsey Williams 6-0, 6-2 in the morning session before a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Wofford's Julia Paulson propelled Upstate rookie to the semifinals.
Taylor Cohen went up against top-ranked Sarah Evans from Wofford in the morning session and advanced with ease, taking down Evans 6-0, 6-1 to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. Cohen looked to extend her singles winning streak to seven matches, but the junior transfer was forced to withdraw due to injury against ETSU's Sopia Espana. Cohen led the match 3-0 in the first set, but withdrew after dropping the next four games.
Julie Bell continued her consistent play Saturday in the back draw with a pair of wins to advance to the semifinals. A morning 6-3, 6-0 victory over Wofford's Carter Tindall propelled Bell to the quarterfinals where she took care of Wofford's Lucy Schermerhorn in straight sets. She is set to battle Presbyterian's Patricia Alves for the right to play in the back draw championship match.
Sarah Vande Berg finds herself in back draw contention with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Presbyterian's Lucia Leahy Saturday morning. Wofford's forfeit in the quarterfinal round sends the freshman to the semifinals where she will face Presbyterian's Kayla Stanford Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
In doubles action, Isabel von Stryk and Talia Rojas knocked off Presbyterian's Lindsay Krause and Carolina DeLoach 8-2 to secure a spot in the back draw championship match where they will take on the miss-match duo of Upstate's Vande Berg and Wofford's Tindall.
Cohen and Bell saw their doubles title run come to an end with an 8-1 loss to Wofford's top-ranked doubles tandem of Sarah Evans and Guinn Garcia. The Spartan combo had won five straight matches this fall before falling in the semifinals.
The final day of the USC Upstate Fall Classic is set to start at 9 a.m. with the semifinals of the singles draw, followed the doubles final at noon. Every match of the weekend tournament is played at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
