SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team took center stage on the final day of the USC Upstate Fall Classic, earning a pair of titles and appearing in two of the four championship matches.
The doubles tandem of Isabel von Stryk and Talia Rojas made the most of their back draw appearance over the weekend as they won three matches in as many days to take home the back draw title. The duo claimed the championship with ease, blanking one their own in Sarah Vande Berg who was teamed up with Wofford's Carter Tindall.
Upstate's lone shot at claiming the winner's bracket singles championship was on the shoulders of freshman and fourth-seeded Constanze Kuerten who was matched up with second-seeded Lyn Yee Choo of ETSU in Sunday morning's semifinal round. Choo cruised to a 6-1 opening set victory, but Kuerten would not go down with ease.
Trailing 5-4 in the second set and needing to break Choo to keep the match alive, the Spartan freshman fought off five match points and battled back to take the game and the set to force a decisive third and final set. Choo would rally in the final set to edge Kuerten 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 and advance to the championship match. No match was contested as Choo was slated to take on teammate Sopia Espana.
The singles back draw title match would also feature a pair of teammates as Upstate's Julie Bell and Vande Berg emerged in the championship final and the match was not played. Bell knocked off Presbyterian's Patricia Alves 6-2, 6-4 Sunday morning to reach the title match, while Vande Berg cruised by Presbyterian's Kayla Stanford 6-2, 6-2 to set up the All-Spartan final.
The Spartans will have two weekends off before returning to action Oct. 12-14 at the Clemson Invitational. The three-day event will take place at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson, S.C.
