Spartanburg, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's golf team will open the 2012-13 season not far from home, making the short drive to the Country Club of Spartanburg to participate in the Terrier Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
The Terrier Invitational is hosted by Wofford and will be a 36-hole event over two days. The Country Club of Spartanburg plays at 5,972 yards and is a par-72 layout. Upstate will make its second appearance in the event. The Spartans also opened the season at the Terrier Invitational a year ago and claimed eighth place.
Upstate is one of 13 teams in the field for the Terrier Invitational. Joining the Spartans in the tournament is Appalachian State, The Citadel, Elon, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Mercer, UNC Pembroke, UNC Wilmington, Presbyterian, Samford, S.C. State and Wofford. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. with an awards ceremony following the completion of play on Tuesday.
Upstate returns a solid core of players from last year's team, including a pair of juniors who were the glue of the team a year ago. Amanda Hall and Taylor Barnes teamed with Brittany Lowe, a freshman in 2011-12, to form the core of the team and return to lead again this year. Hall led the team with an 80.2 stroke average. She, Barnes and Lowe were the only three players to play in every event for Upstate last season.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the lineup of Rachel Reiling, Brittany Lowe, Amanda Hall, Taylor Barnes and Madison Bryant into action this week. Reiling is a newcomer to the team after transferring to Upstate after her freshman season at Adams State. Lowe, Hall and Barnes formed quite the trio a year ago for the Spartans, while Bryant saw action in three tournaments. In addition, freshman Malika Allie will compete as an individual in her first collegiate tournament.
