Jacksonville, Fla. – With heavy rain overnight that lasted into the morning making the course unplayable, the final round of the JU Classic women's golf tournament was canceled Tuesday. With the cancellation, USC Upstate finished 12th after 36 holes were completed of the scheduled 54-hole tournament.
"Today would have been a good opportunity to play well and experience playing in difficult weather conditions," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "We hate to lose an opportunity to play and work on things to improve, but the weather is something that cannot be controlled. We look forward to taking a little time off and practicing as we move closer to our final tournament of the fall."
The JU Classic, played at Marsh Landing Country Club, was reduced to a 36-hole tournament with both rounds played Monday. Rachel Reiling finished as the top Spartan in the tournament, tied for 39th with a 157 total. There was one scoring change from Monday. The score recorders had mistakenly put in the wrong scores Allea Hawkins and Brittany Lowe. Hawkins shot a 78 in the first round instead of an 83, while Lowe shot 83 instead of a 78. Hawkins finished tied for 45th with a 159 total. Amanda Hall totaled 163 and was followed on the Spartans by Lowe (165) and Malika Allie (175).
College of Charleston won the tournament with a 590 total and Florida Atlantic's Jacqueline Shelly claimed the individual tournament championship. North Florida was second at 602 and was followed by Stetson (604), Daytona State (606), Wofford (607), Troy (608), Jacksonville (609), High Point (614), Winthrop (616), College of Charleston "B" (630), Florida Atlantic (643) and Upstate (644).
Upstate will close out the fall portion of its schedule Nov. 4-5 at the Holiday Inn Express Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson in DeLand, Fla., at the Victoria Hills Country Club.
