Spartanburg, S.C. – Following nearly two weeks off from competition, the USC Upstate women's tennis team returns to action this weekend when the Spartans travel south down I-85 to Clemson, S.C., to take part in the Duckworth Family Fall Classic from the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on the Clemson campus.
Along with USC Upstate and Clemson, the tournament will also feature Tulane, VCU, UNC Asheville, ETSU, Wofford, Winthrop, Troy, Armstrong Atlantic, Barry, Georgia Regional University, Charleston Southern, Kennesaw State and Lipscomb. Action kicks off Friday morning at 9 a.m. with the first round of doubles and will continue at 10:30 a.m. with the second round. Singles competition is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
The Spartans will be looking to build off an impressive showing that saw them capture two titles Sept. 22 at the USC Upstate Fall Classic. Freshman Anna Zoske shined in her home debut by claiming championships in both singles and doubles play. The Duesseldorf, Germany, native won three matches in the A singles back draw on her way to the title. Zoske and teammate Taylor Cohen were victorious in the B doubles draw following an 8-6 victory over third-seeded Courtney Gardiner and Patricia Alves of Presbyterian.
Cohen also turned in a strong showing in singles action by reaching the semifinals of the A singles draw, which included an upset of fourth-seeded Sarah Evans of Wofford. Junior Isabel von Stryk reached the semifinals of the A singles draw, while senior Talia Rojas qualified for the semifinals of the B singles draw and nearly advanced to the finals, but dropped a back-and-back forth tiebreaker set 10-7 to top-seeded Salma Dahbi of ETSU.
Following play at Clemson, the Spartans will next take part in ITA Regionals from Chapel Hill, N.C., Oct. 16-20 before closing the fall season by competing in the Charlotte Invitational Oct. 25-26.
