Spartanburg, S.C. – Capping a solid season on the field and a strong academic career off, USC Upstate sophomore midfielder Marvin Schmiege has been named an Academic All-Conference selection in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
"This honor for Marvin is very well deserved," said Upstate head coach Greg Hooks. "He works very hard at being the best student he can be while also giving just as much at being the best soccer player he can be to help our team. He has been a great contributor to our program as a player, a student and a leader and I am thrilled he is being awarded for his hard work."
Schmiege, from Berlin, Germany, carries a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Business Administration major in the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics. The A-Sun Academic All-Conference team is selected after the completion of the regular season in each particular sport. In addition to earning A-Sun Academic All-Conference honors, he is a member of the A-Sun All-Academic team, which is an honor that encompasses academic success throughout the entire academic year.
Schmiege turned in a tremendous season for the Spartans as a leader in the midfield. He finished the year with two goals and two assists for six points, finishing the season as the active leading scorer on the team. He scored goals against Presbyterian and Northern Kentucky, while adding assists against UNC Asheville and ETSU. He also led a potent Upstate offensive attack in the preseason, scoring seven of the Spartans' 15 goals in three preseason scrimmages.
