Spartanburg, S.C. – In his biggest career break to date, former USC Upstate men's soccer player Rory Scovel and his cast mates are set to premiere the new comedy "Ground Floor" on TBS Thursday night at 10:00 p.m.
Scovel was a standout defender at Upstate (then USC Spartanburg) from 2000-02. He helped lead the Spartans to a 46-12-5 record, the 2001 and 2002 Peach Belt Conference Tournament championships and an appearance in the 2002 NCAA Division II Tournament.
After receiving his degree in Communications in 2003, Scovel embarked on a career in stand-up comedy. Playing comedy clubs throughout North America and in such hotbeds as New York City, Washington D.C., Seattle and Atlanta, he gained a reputation for his comedic styling and delivery. He broke into television starring in commercials for Sprint, Nissan, Land Rover and Circuit City. He has also been a regular on late-night shows CONAN, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Comedy Central's "Live at Gotham" shows.
"Ground Floor" is a comedy centered around the workplace and takes place in a major corporation. The show's two leads, Skylar Astin and Briga Heelan, are part of a tight-knit support staff in what has been described as a Romeo and Juliet type of romance. Scovel will play a character named Harvard, who got his nickname because he attended community college and is the only one of his immediate colleagues to continue his education beyond high school. Harvard is described as a feisty know-it-all who has a secret crush on his co-worker, Jennifer, played by Heelan.
"Ground Floor" was created by "Scrubs/Spin City/Cougar Town" creator Bill Lawrence and is written by Lawrence and Greg Malins. The show also boasts "Scrubs" veteran John C. McGinley, a seasoned actor who has recently appeared in the TV show "Burn Notice" and has movie credits in "Platoon", "Get Carter", "Any Given Sunday" and "The Rock", just to name a few.
In advance of Thursday night's premiere of "Ground Floor", Scovel will appear on the Pete Holmes Show tonight at midnight on TBS to promote the show. The pilot episode will air at 10:00 pm Thursday night and will be followed by the second episode of the series at 10:30.
