
Eversgerd Records a Double-Double, But Spartans Fall to NKU

Spartanburg, S.C. – Despite getting the 15th double-double of the season from Kayla Eversgerd, USC Upstate could not hold off Northern Kentucky as the Norse rallied after dropping the first set to take a 3-1 victory over the Spartans in A-Sun volleyball action Friday night in the Hodge Center.
Eversgerd finished the match with a match-high 15 kills to go along with 15 digs to lead Upstate. The Spartans claimed the first set in strong fashion, 25-15, but dropped the next three sets by scores of 17-25, 12-25 and 21-25.
Lexi Gober began the first set with an ace and set the tone for the remainder of the frame. After falling behind 4-3, Upstate rattled off five straight points to open an 8-4 advantage. Although NKU scored the next point to cut the lead to three, Upstate would not allow the Norse to get any closer the rest of the set. The Spartans extended their lead to 10 points, 17-7, opened another 10-point advantage at 21-11 and cruised to the win. Eversgerd and Alexa Lagaly each posted four kills in the frame to lead Upstate.
NKU responded in the second set to even the match. After Upstate opened a 3-0 lead, the Norse rallied to tie the set at 4-4. A nip and tuck battle ensued until NKU scored four straight points to open a 15-10 lead midway through the set. Upstate battled back to cut the lead to three at 17-14, but the Norse extended the lead to as many as seven points and went on for the 25-17 win. Three different Norse players totaled four kills in the frame.
NKU used an early run in the third set to take control and went on for the 13-point win in the frame. With the score tied at 2-2, the Norse used an 8-0 run on Mel Stewart's service to open a 10-2 lead. Upstate cut the lead to seven, but NKU extended the advantage to 10 points at 14-4 and led by as many as 15 en route to taking a 2-1 lead in the match. Jayden Julian posted six kills to lead the Norse attack in the set.
NKU used a run in the latter stages of the fourth set and withstood an Upstate rally to take the 25-21 win and the match. A close set early on was tied at 9-9 when the Norse outscored Upstate 11-6 to open a 20-15 lead. NKU opened a 24-17 lead and watched as the Spartans scored four straight to cut the advantage to 24-21. However, a kill from Megan Wanstrath claimed the set and the match for the Norse.
Julian led four Norse players in double figures for kills in the match. She totaled 13 to go along with 12 digs. Tristen Simpson added 12 kills, while Jenna Ruble tallied 11 kills and four blocks. Wanstrath finished with 10 kills. Taylor Snyder finished with 49 assists, while Anna Prickel finished the match with 22 digs.
Lagaly finished with 13 kills and nine digs to help the Upstate cause. Gober added 30 assists and 10 digs, while Morgan Page posted a match-high 26 digs.
