2013-14 Upstate Women's Golf Schedule
Spartanburg, S.C. – Armed with the second lowest stroke average at the semester break in program history and ahead of last year's overall program record final stroke average, the USC Upstate women's golf team will play in five tournaments this spring as Spartan head coach Todd Lawton has announced the 2014 spring schedule.
Upstate's tournament schedule is highlighted by a trip to Pinehurst, N.C., to play on Pinehurst #1 in the Pinehurst Challenge March 16-17. The Spartans are making their first appearance in the tournament. Upstate begins the spring season at the Kiawah Island Invitational March 2-4, will play in the Pinehurst Challenge and then participate in the Low Country Intercollegiate to close out March on the 23rd and 24th. The Spartans will also make their inaugural appearance in the EKU Colonel Classic April 4-5 in the last regular season tournament before competing in the A-Sun Championships in Jekyll Island, Ga., April 14-16.
"This year's spring schedule offers us new tournaments in the Pinehurst Challenge and the EKU Colonel Invitational, as well as returning to the Kiawah Island Invitational for the first time since 2011," said Lawton. "The challenge and opportunity to play at Pinehurst is exciting to all of us. The fields at the spring events are some of the best in the country, including the one at Kiawah which is the largest field in college women's golf. I have heard great things about the course at EKU's tournament and we are excited about going there for the first time."
Upstate opens the spring season at the Kiawah Island Invitational. It marks the fourth appearance for the Spartans in the event, but the first since 2011. The tournament routinely has more than 30 teams in the field. None of the current players have played in the tournament.
Upstate will travel to Pinehurst, N.C., for the Pinehurst Challenge in its second tournament of the spring. It will be the first appearance for the Spartans in the event. The Spartans will play their third tournament of the spring at the Low Country Intercollegiate. It will be the fifth appearance in the event for the Spartans and the fourth in the last four years. Amanda Hall has played in the previous three tournament stops.
Upstate will make its first appearance in the EKU Colonel Invitational. The tournament boasts a solid field of teams mostly from the Midwest with last year's field also including A-Sun member Northern Kentucky.
Upstate will close out the scheduled portion of the spring campaign at the A-Sun Championships, returning to the Pine Lakes Course at the Jekyll Island Golf Resort. The Spartans finished eighth in last year's tournament and look to use their success from the fall and the four tournaments in the spring to improve on last year's effort.
Upstate played in five tournaments this fall and owns a 319.9 stroke average. The average is the second lowest at the semester break and is 2.1 strokes ahead of last year's final average of 322.0, which broke the all-time program record.
