Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate head volleyball coach Jennifer Calloway has announced the signing of Rebecca Shearer to a National Letter of Intent for the 2014 season.
Shearer hails from a powerhouse volleyball program, St. Francis, and played for Peg Kopec, the all-time leader for high school coaching victories in the state of Illinois. She also plays for Sports Performance Club in Aurora, Ill. Kopec's daughter, Erin, played at Upstate for four years (2000-03) and was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
"Rebecca is an amazing student-athlete," said Calloway. "She has been trained in a highly competitive area of the country and knows how to win. Rebecca plays for the nation's top volleyball club and we are thrilled to have someone with her caliber of skill and experience join our team."
Shearer, a native of Wheaton, Ill., has played for the St. Francis Spartans the past four seasons and Sports Performance Club the last six. The Spartans finished this season ranked 14th nationally in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings. During her four seasons at St. Francis, the program combined for a 141-22 record and back-to-back Class AAA State Championships in 2012 and 2013. The team finished third in the state in 2011 and won a region championship during the 2010 season.
She was named DuPage County Honorable Mention All-Area the last two seasons by the Daily Herald and team MVP at the President's Day Challenge. Shearer also earned All-Tournament Team accolades at the National Junior Classic.
In the classroom, she has made the Academic Honor Roll every semester.
"We feel blessed to have the opportunity to coach her and will be excited to see her grow in all phases of life in the upcoming years at Upstate," Calloway added. "Rebecca is an athlete that can play multiple positions, and we look forward to her being an offensive threat."
