Spartanburg, S.C. - While the USC Upstate softball team played its way into winning the A-Sun Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, members of the team received high marks in the classroom as five Spartans earned Scholar-Athlete honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
The Upstate softball team finished the 2013 season with a 42-12 record and became the first Upstate team to win an A-Sun Tournament, advance to an NCAA national tournament - and played in the Tuscaloosa Regional - and earn a Top 25 national ranking in a major national Top 25 poll. While the Spartans achieved that success on the field, the team also performed extraordinarily in the classroom, posting a 3.210 GPA during the season in the spring semester and a 3.265 in the fall.
Leading the way for the Spartans and receiving NFCA Scholar-Athlete honors for 2012-13 were five Spartans who earned a GPA above 3.5 for the year. Kara Lohr and Anna Miller each posted perfect 4.0 GPAs for the year, while Meredith Barnes, Sam Poarch and Jamie Ujvari all posted 3.6 GPAs in 2012-13.
