SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Riding a four-match conference winning streak into the final week of the regular season, the USC Upstate women's tennis team will look to keep its momentum in tact with a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference road matches at Kennesaw State and Mercer.
The Spartans (12-6, 4-2 A-Sun) are set to close out the regular season with back-to-back matches in the Peach State, taking on Kennesaw State Friday and Mercer Saturday. Both matches are slated to start at 10 a.m.
Story Lines
- After opening the season with back-to-back home conference losses, the Spartans have bounced back and turned into one of the hottest teams in the league, winning four consecutive matches. The Spartans took care of FGCU and Stetson on the road, before returning home and defeating Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb.
- Upstate dominated the early-season A-Sun weekly awards in 2013, capturing three of the first five weekly honors and doing so in consecutive weeks. Isabel von Stryk's weekly award on Feb. 20 was sandwiched between Constanze Kuerten picking up the honor on Feb. 13 and Feb. 27.
- With four straight conference victories, Upstate has clinched a spot in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Tennis Championship and is currently in sole possession of the No. 3 seed, sitting behind ETSU and North Florida.
- Kennesaw State enters the weekend having won three straight conference matches and sitting at 8-10 overall and 3-3 in the league. The Owls have clinched the sixth and final spot in the upcoming A-Sun Championship, but are eying a higher seed as the regular season comes to a close.
- At 5-12 overall and 1-5 in the A-Sun, Mercer has been left on the outside looking in for this year's A-Sun Championship. The Bears have lost eight of their last nine matches and cap the season with back-to-back matches against Upstate and ETSU.
Last Time Out: After dropping the doubles point, the University of South Alabama rallied in singles play to defeat the USC Upstate women's tennis team 6-1 Sunday afternoon in nonconference action at the Upstate Tennis Complex, snapping the Spartans' four match winning streak.
Next Time Out: Following a pair of matches in the Peach State, Upstate will advance to the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Tennis Tournament April 19-21, hosted ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn.
