Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team will begin play at the A-Sun Championships Monday, looking to build on some strong outings this season to improve on its finish in the conference tournament. This will be the Spartans' sixth appearance in the league championship.
The A-Sun Championship is being played at the Jekyll Island Golf Club's Pine Lakes course. It plays at 5,810 yards and is a par-72 layout. Upstate is one of 10 teams vying for the conference championship and will enter the tournament as the No. 9 seed. ETSU is the top seed in the tournament and is followed by No. 2 Mercer, No. 3 Kennesaw State, No. 4 Stetson, No. 5 Florida Gulf Coast, No. 6 Jacksonville, No. 7 North Florida, No. 8 Lipscomb, No. 9 Upstate and No. 10 Northern Kentucky.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the lineup of Taylor Barnes, Amanda Hall, Brittany Lowe, Rachel Reiling and Malika Allie into action this week. It marks the fourth consecutive tournament Lawton has used this lineup with the Spartans claiming two third-place finishes in the last three outings. Barnes, Lowe and Reiling have played in every tournament this season, while Hall has played in all but one. Allie is making her sixth tournament appearance.
Barnes tops the Spartans with a 79.4 stroke average, more than two strokes lower than her career average in what has been a solid campaign for the junior who is foregoing her final year of eligibility next year and graduating this spring. Hall is second on the team with an 80.1 stroke average, while Lowe (82.9) and Reiling (83.2) are third and fourth, respectively. As a team, the Spartans average 323.5 per round, just 1.2 strokes shy of the season school record for stroke average. Upstate is coming off a solid outing at the Bradley Invitational, averaging 320.0 per round en route to a third-place finish. Taylor Barnes finished second and Amanda Hall claimed a tie for seventh to put two Spartans in the Top 10 on the individual leaderboard.
