Spartanburg, S.C. – Looking to get back on the winning track after a pair of midweek losses of things and playing for the A-Sun regular season championship, the USC Upstate softball team plays host to Mercer in the regular season finale and a key three-game A-Sun series Saturday and Sunday at Cyrill Stadium. This weekend is Senior Weekend as Upstate will honor seniors Ericka Harris and Sam Poarch.
Upstate enters the weekend with a 37-9 overall record and is in first place in the A-Sun with a 17-6 record. The Spartans, though, are being pursued by three teams with title hopes of their own as North Florida is 1 1/2 games back and tied with Upstate in the loss column, while Lipscomb and Florida Gulf Coast can get to first place as well depending. Mercer enters the weekend with a 24-29 overall mark and is 10-14 in the A-Sun. The Bears still have postseason hopes alive heading into the weekend and would need a sweep of the Spartans and some help from other teams losing to secure one of six spots in the A-Sun Tournament which runs May 8-11 in Nashville, Tenn.
Upstate is 7-4 all-time against Mercer with all games being played since the Spartans made the move to Division I and the A-Sun in 2008. Upstate also owns a 41-33 lead in scoring in the all-time series. The Bears, though, have won two of the last three meetings in the series and those games were played in Spartanburg at Cyrill Stadium.
