Spartanburg, S.C. – After a successful preseason that saw the Spartans score 15 goals in three scrimmages, the USC Upstate men's soccer team will open the 2013 regular season on the road at Presbyterian Friday night at 7:00 p.m., playing on Edens Field at Martin Stadium.
The game between Upstate and PC will be the season opener for both clubs. Upstate will battle longtime rival Presbyterian for the 25th time in series history. The Spartans own the all-time lead in the series, 16-5-3, including a 2-0 victory at County University Soccer Stadium last year.
Upstate is coming off its best season on the Division I level in 2012. The Spartans tied the program's Division I era record with five wins and totaled the most wins and points in A-Sun play with three wins and 10 points. They were the No. 4 seed in the A-Sun Tournament, qualifying for the conference championship for the first time last year. The Spartans were 2-1-0 in preseason scrimmages with wins coming against Newberry (6-1) and North Greenville (5-0) and a loss coming from Winthrop (5-4).
Presbyterian played two preseason scrimmages against Pfeiffer and Erskine last week. The Blue Hose were 4-16-0 overall last season.
