Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate head softball coach Chris Hawkins added two newcomers for the 2014 softball season and both have joined the Spartans for fall practice. Paris Prusak and Danyele Smith signed in August to become members of the softball program.
"Danyele is a very good, athletic player. She hits well. Defensively, she can play a number of positions and I look for her to be a contributor. Paris is a seasoned veteran. She is a fundamentally sound catcher and knows the game well. I look forward to having both of them in the program," commented Hawkins.
Prusak came to Upstate after spending the first two years of her college career playing at Miami Dade College in Miami, Fla. Prusak was a catcher for the Sharks and played in 56 games in her career. She hit .256 as a freshman to highlight her career on a team that was nationally-ranked in the Top 10 in the NJCAA. She helped lead the Sharks to a 29-16 overall record in 2013, helping pace the team to 13 league victories and the 2013 Southern Conference Championship in the Florida junior college ranks. Prior to her time at Miami, Prusak was a two-time all-conference selection at Bishop Verot HS in Fort Myers, Fla. She was also a two-time team Coaches Award recipient.
Smith came to Upstate after a standout high school career in Virginia. She was a four-time all-district selection at Broadway High School in Broadway, Va. An all-region selection as a junior after helping lead Broadway to the 2A state championship game, she garnered significant recognition as a senior. She was the 2A Player of the Year and a first team all-state selection after breaking Broadway's single season school record with 12 home runs and hitting .560. She also broke the school's career home runs record, finishing her four years with 26 dingers. In addition to her play at Broadway, Smith was a standout on the Virginia Rowdies Elite travel ball team.
