
Upstate Completes Day One of Elon Invitational

Elon, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team wrapped up day one of competition at the Elon Invitational with a pair of Spartans advancing in singles action and two teams reaching the next round in doubles play.
Senior Taylor Cohen (Duluth, Ga.) turned in a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sarah Ruiz of Western Carolina to reach the quarterfinals of the A-1 flight Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Junior Isabel von Stryk (Holm, Germany) also qualified for the quarterfinals of the A-1 flight after she downed Kelly Sullivan of Furman.
Freshman Anna Zoshe (Duesseldorf, Germany) dropped a 6-7 (2), 2-6 decision to Julia Casselburg of William & Mary in the A-2 flight and will compete in the consolation bracket Saturday at 11:15 a.m. Senior Talia Rojas (Lima, Peru) fell 6-3, 0-6, 2-6 to Jamie Grinberg of UNCG and will compete in the consolation bracket.
In the A-3 flight, freshman Ana Baron (Brusque, Brazil) was defeated 2-6, 0-6 by Guila Andreazza of ETSU and will matchup against Ekin Gunausy of Winthrop Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Junior Lindsey Buenger (Shawnee, Kan.) will compete in the consolation bracket of the B-1 flight after falling 0-6, 1-6 to Elon's Viviana Stavreva.
In doubles action, Cohen and Zoshe bested Sydney Smith and Julia Casselburg of Williams & Mary 8-5 to reach the semifinals of the A-2 flight Saturday at 9 a.m. Baron and Buenger received a first round bye and will compete in their first match at 9 a.m.
