Spartanburg, S.C. – With one meet on the books, the USC Upstate men's and women's cross country teams are set to host the Eye Opener meet this weekend at the Milliken Research Park. The college portion of the Eye Opener will be run Friday evening starting at 6:00 p.m.
Upstate hosts the college event on Friday and also helps run the high school event on Saturday as part of the community service efforts of the men's and women's programs. Complete results for both the college and high school events will be posted on upstatespartans.com.
"This will be another good meet to test our fitness and see how we have improved over the last week," said associate head coach Carson Blackwelder. "Our athletes know every inch of the course at Milliken and enjoy the challenges it brings. The race has some quality Division I and II schools which will challenge our athletes."
Upstate returns to the course for the second time in 2013 looking to build on its performances from the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State last week in Boone, N.C. The women finished fourth and the men finished fifth in the meet. Anastasia Kolesnitchenko (Boiling Springs, S.C.) and Jasmine Polite (Goose Creek, S.C.) led the way for the Upstate women in the Covered Bridge Open, while Ross Oden (Salisbury, N.C.) and Alex Love (Pasadena, Md.) led the men's effort.
"We are still in the early part of the season and we really want to focus on increasing fitness and becoming more race savvy," said Blackwelder.
The college field for the Eye Opener consists of 14 men's teams and 15 women's teams. The men's teams are Anderson, Belmont Abbey, Brevard, King, Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone, Mars Hill, Piedmont, Presbyterian, Southern Wesleyan, Upstate, Wake Tech, Wingate and Wofford. The women's teams are Anderson, Belmont Abbey, Brevard, Converse, Davidson, King, Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone, Mars Hill, Piedmont, Presbyterian, Southern Wesleyan, Upstate, Wake Tech and Wingate.
