Spartanburg, S.C. - The 2013 Eye Opener meet concluded Saturday with the running of the high school portion of the meet as USC Upstate helped run the event at the Milliken Research Park adjacent to campus in Spartanburg.
Friday night, Upstate's Ross Oden (Salisbury, N.C.) won the individual championship in the men's 8k in the college portion of the meet. He and his men's and women's teammates then turned around and assisted with Saturday's event as part of the program's dedication to community service. Assisting in the running of the meet is just one of many community service projects spearheaded by the Upstate cross country program. Run over two days with the college portion on Friday evening and the high school portion on Saturday, it is one of the largest cross country meets in the southeast. The meet consisted of 231 varsity and junior varsity teams competing in the boys and girls divisions.
"It was a great morning for races," said Upstate associate head coach Carson Blackwelder. "The temperature was mild for this time of year and it really helped these young runners. Helping host this meet is a great way to give back to the running community and help local runners have a chance to compete on one of the nicest courses in the southeast."
