Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate cross country team, after taking last weekend off from competition, returns to the course Friday evening as it is slated to run in the College of Charleston Invitational from Trophy Lakes in Johns Island, S.C.
The first race of the day is scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m. with the running of the women's 5K, and the men follow at 5:15 p.m. with their 8K race. Scores will be separated by Division I and non-Division I schools, and awards will be given to the top 10 overall men's and women's finishers and the top team in each division.
USC Upstate is one of 17 schools competing in Friday's meet. Along with Upstate, the other 16 teams running are: Allen, Benedict, Campbell, Charleston (W.V.), Charleston Southern, The Citadel, Claflin, College of Charleston, Georgia Southern (women), Paine, Pfeiffer, Savannah State, South Carolina State, Spartanburg Methodist, UNC-Wilmington and Winthrop.
"This should be a good race for us as there will be some good competition to challenge everyone," said Upstate head coach Carson Blackwelder. "With only two more weeks to conference this will give us a good idea of where we are at and who will travel to the conference championships."
The Spartans are back in action for the first time since Oct. 4 when they hosted the Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg. The Upstate men finished tied for seventh led by Griffin Eubanks with a 19th-place performance. The women turned in an eighth-place showing as Jasmine Polite posted the best finish of 25th. A total of eight Spartans recorded personal-best times at the Upstate Invitational while six others posted season-best marks.
The College of Charleston Invitational will be the final meet for Upstate prior to the A-Sun Championships. The 2014 A-Sun Championships is being hosted by Stetson and slated for Saturday, Nov. 1 in DeLand, Fla. beginning at 10 a.m.
