Spartanburg, S.C. – Rachel Reiling finished the Terrier Intercollegiate with a 156 total and in sixth place to record her career-best individual tournament finish. She led the USC Upstate women's golf team to a sixth-place showing in the tournament Tuesday afternoon at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
Reiling, who played her freshman season at NCAA Division II member Adams State in her home state of Colorado, previously had a career-best finish of a tie for eighth at the RMAC Women's Golf Event #2 in 2011 while playing for the Grizzlies. Her top finish at Upstate prior to Tuesday was a 13th-place effort at the 2013 Eat-A-Peach Classic.
Reiling posted rounds of 74 and 82 to finish at 156 and in sixth place. Reiling's individual finish matched Upstate's team position for the tournament as the Spartans followed Monday's round of 323 with a 333 on Tuesday. Upstate finished sixth with a 656 total. The Spartans counted scores of 80 from Sidney Dermody, 82 from Reiling, 83 from Payton Culler and 88 from both Malika Allie and Allea Hawkins (only one of the 88's counted toward the team score). Kinsey Soniat, playing as an individual, shot an 88, while Allie Gennaula, also playing as an individual, shot 94.
Seminole State stormed all the way from sixth place entering the final round to post a 294 on Tuesday, 14 strokes better than the next best team score, to win the tournament with a 622 total. Appalachian State was second at 623 and was followed by Wofford (625), Winthrop (634), Gardner-Webb (642), Upstate (656), Converse (676), Presbyterian (693) and The Citadel (703). Seminole State's Sydney Legacy claimed the individual championship with a 147 total.
"In general, the course got a little more difficult today for players struggling with putting speed," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "I am proud of Rachel's tournament effort and finish. It's always a great opportunity to play so close to home."
Reiling finished the tournament with two birdies and 22 pars to lead the Upstate cause. Dermody turned in a 162 total to finish 22nd as the second-best Spartan in the tournament. Culler finished one shot behind and in a tie for 23rd with a 163 total and made three birdies in her round on Tuesday. Hawkins finished 38th at 175, while Allie was 47th at 183. Gennaula finished tied for 41st at 179 and Soniat was 43rd at 180.
Upstate will take a week off from competition before closing out the fall schedule at the Winthrop Intercollegiate Nov. 1-2 at the Rock Hill Country Club.
