
Upstate Takes on Kennesaw State in A-Sun Road Match

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team makes the trip to Kennesaw State Saturday afternoon to face the Owls at 3 p.m. from the KSU Convocation Center.
The Spartans head into the weekend with a 9-14 overall record and 0-7 mark in the league. Upstate wraps up a three-match road trip Saturday after falling last weekend at Jacksonville and North Florida. Kayla Eversgerd, Shannon Weiss and Lexi Gober each set new career-highs last Saturday in the loss at North Florida. Eversgerd recorded a career-high 34 digs, while Weiss had a new career mark with 15 kills and Gober 24 digs. All three finished the match with double-doubles.
Eversgerd continues to pace the Spartan offense as she is one of five players with triple-digit kills at 226. Kayla McAvoy is second with 211 kills followed by Weiss (195), Emily Koelling (138) and Alexa Lagaly (118). Gober tops the team with 736 assists and 34 service aces, and Kaleigh Kelley is first in digs with 293. Koelling has a team-high 50 total blocks.
Kennesaw State, led by second-year head coach Keith Schunzel, is 8-13 overall and 2-5 in conference play. The Owls are led on offense by Kelly Marcinek with 256 kills, while Anaiah Boyer is second with 178. Kristi Piedimonte has dished out 682 assists this season and is tied for the team lead in aces with Katarina Morton at 25. Morton also leads the team in digs with 327.
KSU leads the all-time series over Upstate 9-4 including a 6-0 mark when playing in Kennesaw. The Spartans opened A-Sun play against Kennesaw State on Sept. 27 and fell 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-17) at the Hodge Center. In the last meeting in Kennesaw, the Owls won by a 3-0 (14-25, 14-25, 16-25) score.
